'The Lost Decoration of Historic Buildings' examines with new evidence the richly symbolic and colourful arts once applied to our medieval and Tudor cathedrals, palaces and houses. It reveals fresh insights about the important characters who created them: kings, queens, bishops and nobles; how it was popularly adopted, and how and why this conspicuous visual language was subverted or destroyed upon its inheritance by those whose views were different.

The author and presenter Dr Jonathan Foyle is former Chief Executive of World Monuments Fund Britain, and a Curator of Historic Buildings at Historic Royal Palaces. Following a Courtauld Institute MA on Tudor and Stuart-era Art & Architecture, his Archaeology PhD presented a reconstruction of Cardinal Wolsey's Hampton Court. He is now a consultant on the analysis, interpretation and presentation of historic buildings, and produced the content for Visit England's 2018 'England Originals', an innovative app-based heritage tourism resource. A presenter of numerous television programmes on architecture and history (including BBC 2's Climbing Great Buildings [Broadcast Award 2010]; Channel 4's Restoration of the Year), and A/V guides at sites like Bletchley Park, he is a regular contributor to the FT Weekend on issues of heritage and crafts, which led him to become an ambassador for the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust. He is presently writing the sixth in his series of monographs on English cathedrals and great churches, and lectures internationally.
